Te Reo Maori

2017 Banks Avenue Cultural Festival Performance!

Our children performed in the 2017 Cultural Festival. They were amazingily behaved and got compliments from all of the stage crew. We were so proud of them!

MATARIKI EVENING
Thank you to all of the families who joined us for our Matariki evening. The children enjoyed having you in our classroom for a shared dinner and to show off their work.

They spent a lot of time during the week looking at the Māori legends behind Matariki, learning poi and rakau.

This year we are looking at whakatauki and karakia and using them during our day. The children get a good chance to do this at assembly when Ms Watts shares her Magical Maori Moment and at kapahaka where we start each session with a karakia.
In the Tuis, we are trying to make an effort to remember to start our day with a whakatauki that the children will learn about and be able to share as the year progresses.

Kia Ora, haere mai!  This week we have been looking at Maori myths and legends and singing some waiata.
The children have really enjoyed the Matariki song that they learnt during Matariki and sung at the visit to the Star Dome with Science Alive.  See if they will sing it to you.

One of their favourite stories was about how the stars of Matariki came to be.

We have been looking at Kiwiana in the Tui's and listened to the classic Poi e today.  The children were particularly taken with the 1980's breakdancing!
